Feejee Mermaid

A grotesque sideshow curiosity inspired by the legendary Feejee Mermaids that blurred the line between spectacle, folklore and fabrication.

Part human, part sea creature, this Cursed Items interpretation combines desiccated anatomy, long hair and fish-like scales with an ornate aged display base, creating the appearance of an old gaff that might once have drawn crowds behind a velvet curtain.

THE CURIOSITY

The Feejee Mermaid became one of the great icons of 19th-century sideshow culture, presented as the preserved remains of a creature that seemed to belong equally to natural history and deliberate deception.

This Cursed Items interpretation embraces that same unsettling ambiguity. Its shriveled anatomy, exaggerated features, fish-like lower body and heavily aged finish are designed to suggest an object that has survived decades of exhibitions, private collections and questionable provenance.

The result is less a conventional mermaid sculpture and more a classic sideshow gaff, designed to look as though it already carries its own strange history.

Created entirely from synthetic materials. No real human or animal remains are used.

DISPLAY & PRESENTATION

The mermaid and display base are separate pieces, allowing the figure to be removed and repositioned as desired.

The base is produced in resin and hand-painted with an aged wood-like finish to complement the worn, vintage character of the piece.

The complete display is securely protected inside a custom-made wooden shipping crate for international transport.
